RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

Secret Safari to Africa is committed to responsible tourism. We see this as finding the right balance between the demands of holidaymakers and protecting the environment we promote.
We are particularly conscious that our work should benefit the local communities and the conservation of biodiversity. To this end we support one organization, Children in the Wilderness.

CHILDREN IN THE WILDERNESS hosts vulnerable, rural children that live alongside the Parks and Reserves and teaches them the importance of conservation. The Children in the Wilderness program aims to develop environmental leaders who are inspired to care for their heritage so that they become the custodians of these areas in the future. Children in the Wilderness exposes children to their wildlife heritage, builds and strengthens their capabilities to cope with life's challenges and educates them with the life skills necessary to actualize their greatest potential.

HOW IT WORKS

The Children in the Wilderness program hosts vulnerable rural children of between 8 and 16 years old, in groups of up to 45 participants at a time, for periods of up to a week at Wilderness Safaris Camps. The well-structured curriculum is offered in a safe wilderness environment where nature becomes the teacher and the healer, aided by experienced and well-trained mentors.
During the children’s stay, the focus is on providing a wide variety of educational activities in an age-appropriate and fun way. We believe and have seen from some of our past camps that by the end of the program, many of the children are motivated to continue with their schooling and to strive for a better life.
Now going into it’s eight years Operation, this initiative continues to run highly successful programs in Wilderness safaris camps and is now operational in seven southern African countries in which Wilderness Safaris operates i.e. Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Since the inception of the program, a total of 3263 children have been hosted throughout southern Africa, resulting in each child having had his or her life materially and positively changed for the better.

ECO-TOURISM

- A CLASSIC AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE - "Eco-tourism" can broadly be defined as the careful and sustainable utilization of natural and cultural resources for the purposes of low-impact tourism. It is a principle to which we at Secret Safari to Africa strongly subscribe, both because it is the only long-term, responsible form of tourism in an ecologically and culturally sensitive environment, and because it provides the traveler with a more intimate and fulfilling experience. Small, environmentally friendly camps and lodges catering to a few discerning travelers not only have a much more limited impact on their environment than do large hotels, but they provide their guests with the perfect setting from which to encounter the true African wilderness. From the deserted beaches of Mozambique to the wilderness of the Peace Park without forgetting the trendy Cape Town, we are searching Africa’s vast and diverse habitats for special places to stay. We only offer accommodation at resorts that we are certain encompass high standards of care and quality, it is the human touch that we are after and we like to be sure that the hotels and lodges which we propose will not compromise when it comes to look after you our clients and respect mother nature.
